Hamish is a graduate of the Otago Medical School. He completed his Orthopaedic surgery training through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2009. He subsequently underwent subspecialist fellowship in North America. At the University of Calgary Sports Medicine Centre, he gained expertise in the treatment of Sports and soft tissue injuries of the knee and shoulder. Following on from that he spent time at Stanford University and Nashville with world leaders in the emerging field of hip arthroscopy.

On return to New Zealand, Hamish set up Forte Sports, a multi-disciplinary Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic clinic in Christchurch, which he ran for 7 years until Forte Sports joined the Axis Sports Medicine team in 2024.

Hamish’s orthopaedic passion is around the management of sporting injuries and related conditions. With a desire to provide the best care possible, he is heavily involved in research on the treatment of ACL injuries. In 2013 Hamish established the New Zealand ACL Registry, a research trust that is now following over 20,000 patients who have gone through ACL reconstruction surgery. The Registry is highly respected in the international Sports Medicine community. Research carried out through the Registry has been published in many of the leading Orthopaedic journals. This work has contributed to a significant improvement in the management of patients with ACL injuries.

Hamish grew up farming in Central Otago and maintains close ties to the region. Mountain biking and bike packing, back country skiing, hiking and hunting are passions that keep dragging him back into the beautiful southern mountains.

Hamish is married to Rachelle (Te Arawa, Nga Puhi), an ENT surgeon and Chair of the New Zealand Medical Council. They have two teenage kids and a pair of energetic Viszla, who love joining the mountain bike rides and early morning skinning laps.
